BTCWA Champ Show November 2018

HELEN GLASBY MEMORIAL CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

RESULTS 2018

JUDGE: Mrs CAROLYN ALEXANDER (USA)

What a pleasure to come to Western Australia for the first time and to discover the beautiful Bull Terriers and nice Bull Terrier people. Judging this show was a pleasure.  When judges are able to find good quality in every class and the decision process can be largely based on priority of virtue, it’s a good day!  This was a wonderful day.  So many good Bull Terriers!  As I said that evening, the area breeders are doing something/a lot of things right.  Overall, I found very sound dogs, of good proportion and bone with real head quality that included correct bites.  Most moved well, as evidenced by the large number of movement cards I gave out.  The dogs were in good shape.   Most were strong and agile. They showed that they get good exercise and attention.

In our breed, many have fallen too far into the great virtue outweighs great fault theory.   The fundamental truth is that while winners have great virtue (such as beautiful heads), they need to have capable, correct bodies also.  And the outstanding head is more than just a well-turned profile, it is also fill, eyes, ear size and placement, and bite, strength of underjaw, etc.  In many breeds the undershot bite is acceptable and the reverse scissors is considered to be at least as strong as the scissors bite.  Bites in our breed must be realistically evaluated in combination with all other parts of the dog. Saying that, breeders must understand that instanding canines are always a serious concern not just for judges and breeders, but mostly for the health and welfare of the dog.

Additionally, the temperaments were good to absolutely wonderful!  For the foreseeable future, an important criterion for our dogs will remain that they are spirited, but biddable and friendly.  Keep up the good work with these dogs.  They are not only great family companions, but they are well made and competitive in the show ring.  Most BT love to be trained if you make it fun for them.  The dogs I saw this night were a real credit to our breed and could compete handily against other breeds in group rings, when well trained and shown.

For the most part, the sizes were moderate and traditionally correct.   In general, I felt I was seeing a lot of dog in the package, i.e. good bone and substance, good musculature.  Congratulations to the breeders and exhibitors who were showing these awesome Bull Terriers.

A word about the grounds. The grass, facilities, and lighting were superb.  Australian dog clubs deserve much credit for their facilities and this was definitely an outstanding venue.

Thank you to all the club members who came and supported the show.  Thank you for your hospitality and especially thank you for inviting us.  I am truly enthused for you, your Bull Terriers, and your breeding programs.
